
The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) says it has trained account and audit officers of basic education on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).
The commission said in a statement signed by its Public Relation Officer, Mr Ossom Ossom, in Kaduna on Thursday that the measure was to ensure accountability in the delivery of Universal Basic Education (UBE) services across the country.
According to the commission, 135 officers participated in the four-day training which ended on Thursday, at Akwanga, Nassarawa State.
Those that participanted in training include finance and account personnel, directors of finance at State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEB), heads of internal audit and UBE account desk officers.
Commenting on the training, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, said that the training was organised to acquaint the officials with the rules and procedures of financial transactions under the UBE programme.
Bobboyi, who was represented by the Director, Administration and Supplies, Rt. Rev. Edwin Jarumai, reiterated the commission’s commitment in ensuring total compliance with stipulated regulations guiding UBE financial operations.
The executive secretary urged state governments to support the commission’s effort in ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation of UBE programmes.
He also disclosed that UBEC and SUBEB would soon adopt and ensure uniformity in accounting processes in basic education delivery.
Also, the UBEC’s Director, Finance and Accounts, Mr Michael Aule, emphasised the importance of promoting transparency, accountability, probity and efficiency in the management of UBE intervention fund.
The director equally noted the need for continued training and retraining to improve the capacity of UBEC and SUBEB’s account and audit officers for effective service delivery.
