Again, another truck crashes around Lugard roundabout Kaduna – FRSC

A Mercedes Benz 911 truck, loaded with vegetables has crashed around Lord Lugard Roundabout in Kaduna metropolis, leaving two persons injured.

This happened barely three days after a trailer crashed on the same sport, killing two persons.

Hafiz Mohammed, Sector Commander, The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command confirmed the accident in Kaduna on Sunday.

Mohammed said that the accident, which involved seven persons, occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

“The truck, with registration number XD386FGG was coming from Zaria when the driver, one Aliyu Mohammed, trying to navigate the roundabout on high speed lost control of the truck and crashed.

“There were seven persons in the vehicle, but only two were injured and have been taken to the hospital for treatment by the FRSC rescue team,” he said.

Mohammed described the incident as “very disturbing”, adding that the roundabout was becoming a death trap for trailers and heavy trucks plying the road at night.

He said that so far, this was the third time accident involving heavy trucks had occurred in the middle of the night in the last three weeks in the same sport.

He explained that part of the reason why trailers and other heavy-duty trucks passed through Kaduna township was to avoid the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway which has gone terribly bad.

The sector commander appealed to the state government to put some emergency measures around the roundabout to prevent avoidable accidents.

Also, Mr Aliyu Mohammed, Commandant, Civilian Joint Task Force, Anguwan Shanu, told NAN that he and his men have witnessed more than five accidents in the same roundabout in December alone.

Mohammed equally called on the state government to redesign the roundabout to prevent further loss of lives and property.

Responding, Mr Mohammed Magaji, Managing Director, Kaduna State Road Agency, said that the agency would soon address the problem.

“We are aware of the reoccurring accidents at the roundabout and we have designed a temporary measure to solve the problem.

“Moreover, there is a plan under the Kaduna Urban Renewal Project to construct a road from the Lugard Hall Roundabout to old Nigerian Defence Academy site, which will take care of the problem.

“There is already a plan to continue the expansion of the road from the Lugar Hall Roundabout to Station Roundabout and from there to Command Junction, which will take care of the problem,” he said.

Magaji added that the agency had also concluded plans to patch the potholes along Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway to make the highway motorable and prevent heavy trucks from passing though the town.
